Biographical Details Known
Daniel was born in 1885 and he lived in Mold with his father John (an auctioneer's assistant) and his mother Hannah. In the 1891 census the family lived at number 6 Conway Street and there were 7 children living at home at that time. (John 17, Emma 15, William 10, Daniel 6, Edith and Agnes 4 and Robert 2).
By 1901 the family lived in number 13 Conway Street and only three of the children were still at home. These included Daniel who was listed on the census as a 16 year old cellar man - a bottler.
In 1906 when he was 21 Daniel married Sychdyn girl Catherine Whitley. Catherine and four children (Daniel, Ernie, Johnny and Agnes) lived in Chapel Walk, Sychdyn.
Daniel's name appears on the war Memorial in Mold as well as on Sychdyn's but he is not included on the Northop Parish memorial.
The Memorial in Khadki commemorates all British servicemen that died in India during The Great War.

Many thanks to Daniel James's grandaughter, Margaret Roberts for sharing these intruiging photographs. (Sorry we've taken so long Margaret!)
James family photographs.
The woman on the right is Emma James - sister to Daniel. She was in service at Erddig Hall where the Yorke family famously took photographs of their servants. Although, we don't know for sure, we guess that this is one of those photographs.
This is Emma again much later. She married a miner who was killed in the Gresford disaster
Daniel James's eldest son was also named Daniel. He worked in the grounds of the Gwsaney Estate as a woodman. Here he is with a group of his fellow estate workers. Daniel (jnr) is standing 4th from the left.

This photograph has the following written on the back of it.
'Alice James age 7, killed January 1924.'
Other than that, nothing is known about this little girl. Can anyone help with more information?
Mystery Photographs.
The rest of the photographs on this page are a mystery. They were in a box that belonged to the wife of Daniel James (jnr). Sadly we don't know anything about them. We reproduce them here in the hope that a family member can shed light on them. There is just a chance that our soldier, Daniel James appears on one of them.
Another of Daniel's sisters. This is Edith who went to live in Australia. On the back of the photograph it says, 'This is me taken outside my house, taken last year.'
Seems to be four generations but who are they? On the back it says,
'Mrs James, 23 New Street Mold'
On the back of this one it says
'Love from Stanley and Kitty'.
Who are these handsome officers?
Another mystery man
We could not resist this wonderful photograph although technically, we believe it has little to do with the subject of our website. Our guess is that this is a celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. We love the home made drums
