James Samuel Stretch who was born in 1890 in Little Sutton, Cheshire and he served in the Royal Field Artillery during WW1. He survived the war and settled in Northop Hall with his wife Mary. He was a gardener at Highfield Hall where they lived in a property on the estate but later,  moved to Malvern Villas in the village.
James Samuel Stretch (on the right) with a comrade in his army days.
This intruiging document belonged to James and has survived all these years. It seems to be a battalion field diary of movements and activities between July 1916 and Christmas Day in 1918. The letters DAC stand for 'Divisional Ammunition Column' and this was changed later to BAC (Brigade Ammunition Column). The main means of delivering ammunition was railway and miles of light tracks were laid in order to deliver ammunition to the fighting troops. The document, probably typed retrospectively from field diaries is a veritable catalogue of much of WW1. (Thanks to Keith Ridding for his help with this).
James was a member of the Home Guard in Northop Hall during WW2. To see a memento of his days at that time click on the link.
Many thanks to James's grandaughter, Edna Hughes for allowing us to post these documents on the website
A soldier's story.

James samuel Stretch does not appear on the list above because he joined the army in Cheshire, where he was born. He did, however,  become a Northop Hall resident and so he qualifies to be on this page.
